There are a lot of people out there who are interested in learning how to play guitar, and there are just as many reasons that keep people from doing so. I’ve always been of the opinion that the best way to learn guitar is with a great teacher who not only will get you playing quickly but will also help you understand the greater importance and meaning of what you learn.

In order to find a great teacher, you need to look out for a few things. Here are my thoughts.

Teaching Philosophy

There are many people out there who can teach you how to play chords. Hell, there are countless YouTube videos that can do that. But what’s great about a guitar teacher is that they are there with you and can correct mistakes before they become bad habits. I also believe that only a teacher can convey the musical theory related to a guitar lesson and how a particular piece correlates with it. This knowledge will then later allow you to make smart decisions when learning a new song or writing one of your own.

Experience

It’s always important to know what kind of guitar experience a potential teacher has. While a lot of people are qualified to teach you a few chords, less are qualified to really take you anywhere you want to go with the guitar. For example, I’ve been teaching guitar for over 35 years and have worked extensively within the music industry.

Personality

Lastly, you should consider how you get along with a potential teacher. After all, guitar lessons should be fun, and having a good time will help keep you motivated.
